How the USMNT should line up vs Canada in Gold Cup quarterfinal: Red hot Jesus Ferreira to be unleashed again as Bryan Reynolds & Cade Cowell deserve to continue

Before the Gold Cup got going, U.S. men's national team interim coach B.J. Callaghan divided the tournament up into two halves. The first was the group stage, clashes with Jamaica, St. Kitts & Nevis and Trinidad & Tobago, which he could use to mix and match while figuring out his team. And then would come the knockouts, a chance to reset, refocus and charge forward towards another trophy.

Well, we're in the business end of the tournament now and, with a week between games, the U.S. heads into the knockout rounds with a clash against Canada. The time for rotating and experimenting is done; now let's see who steps up.

The Gold Cup, of course, is more about individual performances than anything else for the USMNT. The main team, by and large, is on vacation after their Nations League triumph. The players in this camp are largely on the fringes and pushing for more.

Several have seized their chance thus far, earning the right to keep their starting place for the knockouts. However, Callaghan does have some difficult decisions to make. With everyone fit and healthy, who does he leave out? And, with one key player on yellow card watch, does Callaghan make a change now to avoid a potential semifinal suspension?

GOAL takes a look at how the U.S. could line up...

  • Matt Turner World Cup 2022Getty

    GK: Matt Turner

The time for experimenting is over, and, unfortunately, we didn't get to see Gaga Slonina get a run during the group stage.

This is Turner's time - if fit and healthy, the Arsenal goalkeeper starts every game going forward.

  • Bryan Reynolds USMNTGetty

    RB: Bryan Reynolds

One of the standouts of the group stage, Reynolds has made this spot his own.

Could Callaghan be tempted to turn to the veteran DeAndre Yedlin? Sure, but should he? Absolutely not. Reynolds has been fantastic so far and has earned the chance to start the rest of the way. We'll see if he sinks or swims but, at least so far, Reynolds has been fantastic.

  • Robinson USMNT 2023 El SalvadorGetty

    CB: Miles Robinson

With another week of rest under his belt, Robinson should just about be 100 percent fit.

He was given a 45-minute runout in the final group-stage game, which was a nice rehab assignment. Now, Robinson should be feeling right for the knockouts, where he'll likely start every game, should the US progress.

  • Jalen Neal USMNT 2023Getty Images

    CB: Jalen Neal

A big, big decision for Callaghan.

It shouldn't be, to be fair. Neal has been the breakout star of this team, the player that has improved his stock the most with his performances so far. However, Neal is one yellow card away from being suspended for a potential semifinal match.

Looking ahead, though, this Canada game is likely the tougher match than a potential Qatar/Panama semifinal. Knowing that, we'll give Neal the start. If he makes it through the game unpunished, fantastic. If not, he'll get a rest for the semis against a team that is, theoretically, less talented than the one the U.S. will face on Sunday.

  • DeJuan Jones USMNT 2023Getty Images

    LB: DeJuan Jones

It seems that Jones is the guy ahead of John Tolkin. The fact that he started that third game against Trinidad made that fairly clear and, based on what we've seen so far, who could blame Callaghan for seeing it that way?

Jones has been as solid as you can be, both in defense and attack, notably picking up an assist for the first goal in that win over the Soca Warriors. This game will be his biggest test yet as Jones, with just four caps to his name, should face a bit more trouble against Canada.

  • James Sands Alexis Vega Estados Unidos México Amistoso 2023Crédito: Getty

    CM: James Sands

A locked-in starter here based on what we've seen.

Sands has been fantastic all tournament long. He's been played as a solo No.6 and as part of a double-pivot where, in both roles, he's looked fantastic.

Put his name in sharpie in the midfield.

  • Roldan USMNT 2022Getty

    CM: Cristian Roldan

There are a few directions Callaghan could go with this one. Gianluca Busio as a more creative option, Aidan Morris to add another defensive-minded midfielder, or Jackson Yueill, albeit that one feels unlikely.

For a bit of veteran experience, we'll put Roldan into the XI. He wasn't fantastic on the wing in the last game, but he should be fine to add a bit of presence to the midfield for this one. Then, in the second half, you can chuck in Busio or Morris depending on what the game needs.

  • Mihailovic USMNTGetty

    CM: Djordje Mihailovic

Like Sands, Mihailovic is locked into a starting spot.

Mihailovic has been an absolute menace all tournament long, flexing the creativity that saw him earn a move to AZ Alkmaar. The midfielder is playing with freedom and is full of confidence. If he carries that into the knockouts, it'll be tough for Canada to handle him.

  • Alejandro Zendejas Estados Unidos 2023

    RW: Alejandro Zendejas

He's been a bit disappointing so far, but that's also because expectations were sky-high. None of that will matter, though, if Zendejas balls out in the knockouts.

The Club America star is competing for a backup spot with the main team but, at least so far, he hasn't been able to seize his chance to be the star of this attack. He seems just a step off his game but, with a week between matches, the hope will be that the U.S. can get a bit more of out of him going forward in this tournament.

  • Ferreira uSMNT T&TGetty

    ST: Jesus Ferreira

Unfortunately for Brandon Vazquez, who has been good enough to warrant a start, Ferreira has been a phenomenon.

With six goals in his last two games, there's no way you can bench Ferreira, right? He'll perhaps be the most upset by the week in between games as, in this sort of form, he'll have been eager to have gotten back out there immediately.

Will the slight break cool him down? He will hope not, especially because this is his big chance to score against someone other than the minnows of the region after all of the Pirate of the Caribbean talk.

  • Cade Cowell USYNT U20 World Cup vs SlovakiaGetty Images

    LW: Cade Cowell

A tough one here, mostly because Cowell can be so damn good as a supersub. Still, with Jordan Morris just coming back from injury, Cowell is the best option here.

Callaghan could really change it up by shifting to a two-striker formation to pair Vazquez with Ferreira, but that feels unlikely. He could also put Roldan in this spot once again and go with one of the other midfield options listed earlier.

But we say it makes the most sense to give the kid another go, especially after such a good performance against T&T.
