'Absolutely baffling' - Fans rage as Chelsea star Moises Caicedo escapes red card for 'shocking' challenge on Tottenham Pape Sarr

Chelsea's Moises Caicedo had a lucky escape as he avoided a red card just past the half-hour mark against Tottenham Hotspur for a poor challenge on Pape Sarr. The midfielder caught Sarr on his shin with his studs up which could have resulted in a severe injury for the Senegal international. A VAR check was conducted but no red card was awarded.

As Caicedo avoided a sending off, fans fumed on social media, with some of them pointing out that Cristian Romero was shown the red card for a similar challenge on Blues' Enzo Fernandez in a Premier League clash last year.

Fan Beth Lindop wrote on X, "That is absolutely baffling that Caicedo’s not been sent off there.."

An X handle named Hotspur Related posted, "Moises Caicedo avoids a red card for a follow through on #thfc midfielder Pape Matar Sarr. Cristian Romero got a red for a similar tackle in the same game last season!"

Nick Roberts added, "If Caicedo were an @Arsenal player he's off on a red for that challenge. Comically bad officiating again by the @FA_PGMOL."

A handled named DizzyFPL showed concern for Sarr as the post read, "The only thing that's saved Pape Sarr's career from that is that it was Caicedo who stood on his shin and not Caicedo's ma."

Ben Rogers wrote, "Lol, clear as day red for Caicedo, nothing to see here says the ref on VAR duty. Absolute shambles."

The Blues started the game on a disastrous note as the hosts took a two-goal lead within the first 11 minutes. Left-back Marc Cucurella was at fault for both strikes as he slipped twice to help Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski find the back of the net. For the visitors, Jadon Sancho pulled one back in the 17th minute with a sensational long-range strike before Cole Palmer levelled the match from the penalty spot.

Enzo Maresca's side are back in European action next with a trip to Kazakhstan to face Astana on Thursday.
