  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Fernandez made the decision to split up with his childhood sweetheart Cervantes in October despite having two children together. The pair had been together since they were youngsters, while the midfielder was playing for Argentine club River Plate, before she became pregnant at the age of 19 and then travelled with him as he joined Benfica and then Chelsea. Cervantes has now opened up on her 'sudden' split with the Chelsea star.

  • WHAT CERVANTES SAID

Speaking to Hola, Cervantes said: "Everything was fine and suddenly one day he told me that he didn't want to be [with me] anymore. There are things that I still have to process, but that's it, I accepted it.

"When we met, I worked in an empanada restaurant and studied Law. He was in River Plate and then played in the reserve team. When we moved in together, I changed jobs to a call center near the Obelisk.

"At that time I earned more than his representative gave him, we spent my entire salary, I had nothing left to save. And after nine months I got pregnant with Olivia, I was 19 years old."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Cervantes also revealed that Fernandez had suggested that she and their two children could live with him for the time being in London, but she decided to reject the Chelsea star's offer.

She added: "Enzo offered me to stay in the same house where we lived and told me that he was going to rent another place, but I told him I would go back to Argentina for my family. Because I gave everything in that relationship and I don’t regret anything, but everything I did was for him and for the family we formed."

    WHAT NEXT FOR FERNANDEZ?

Since the pair split up, Fernandez has seen a massive upturn in his form for Chelsea and has carved a way into Enzo Maresca's starting lineup for the Blues. He will likely be a starter again when Chelsea take on Shamrock Rovers on Thursday evening.
