Atletico Madrid still keen on Mason Greenwood transfer despite potential backlash as Barcelona give them clear run at Man Utd outcast

Diego Simeone's side will have a clear run at Greenwood in the summer as Barcelona, who were also said to be keen on signing the winger, have effectively withdrawn their interest. The Rojiblancos understand that there could be a potential for backlash from supporters, however, they believe that the club will profit from the Englishman's talents, according to The Times.

Even if Greenwood's return to Manchester United has not been ruled out yet, a permanent exit is the "most likely outcome" for the 22-year-old. The report also states that the Red Devils are anticipated to demand about £40 million ($51 million) for the England international, whose contract with the club expires in 2025.

Atletico believe there is potential for backlash from fans if Greenwood signs after he was arrested and charged with attempted rape, assault and engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour. The charges were subsequently dropped by the Crown Prosecution Services due to the "withdrawal of key witnesses" which meant there was “no longer a realistic prospect of conviction."

The 22-year-old winger has made an impact in La Liga at Getafe as he has scored eight goals and set up five more for the Madrid-based club. Greenwood and his team will next be in action against Girona on Saturday, March 16.
