Malawi coach Ronny Van Geneugden ready for friendly against Kenya

Malawi coach Ronny Van Geneugden says that the friendly against Kenya has come at the right time for his players, who don’t get enough play time.

Harambee Stars will host the Flames in a friendly on Tuesday and the Belgian coach feels it will provide him with the chance to test some of his players, who are starved off playing time in their respective clubs ahead of their next Afcon match against Cameroon in October.

“We have some top players playing outside Malawi, unfortunately, they play on the bench-sometimes not even in the selection when they play in South Africa so for us it is good that they can have enough playtime with two games in one week."

The Flames went down 3-0 to Morocco on Saturday but the Belgian seems to have already forgotten their humiliating trip to North Africa.

This will be the second time that Van Geneugden will be facing Harambee Stars having settled for a 0-0 draw in his early stint with Flames in 2017 and he hopes that he will draw into the pot of experience to stop the hosts.

“We come to Kenya with good intention to have a good result in an away game. I know Kenya will play with a lot of confidence, not only on the pitch but even the fans will be very excited after that victory against Ghana," the coach told Goal.

“What I know from Kenya is a very strong athletic team, with strong technical players so you can say they play kind of football you can anticipate-kick and rush. They also have some individual players who can make the difference, so it is a very big challenge for us.”

The last three games between both teams have all ended in draws.
