The Belgium international striker says a desire to work under the Red Devils' Portuguese boss helped to lure him to Old Trafford in a big-money switch

Romelu Lukaku has revealed that his “dream” of working with Jose Mourinho helped to make a £75 million move to Manchester United a reality.

The Belgium international striker was a man in-demand during the summer transfer window of 2017, with the Red Devils battling Premier League rivals Chelsea for a much sought-after signature.

Eventually, Lukaku took the decision to snub a potential return to Stamford Bridge and open a new chapter in his goal-laden career at Old Trafford.

The 24-year-old admits that the presence of Mourinho in Manchester influenced his decision, with the Portuguese a manager he had longed to play for since an early age.

Lukaku told ESPN Brasil on why he joined United: “Because before I had a dream of playing for the manager, Jose Mourinho.

“When I was little, at age of 11, I was at Chelsea. I was talking to my mum and dad that I wanted to play for him, because I really like his personality as a manager.

“He won many titles for Chelsea and Porto and now I’m very happy that I work with him. Because he’s a manager who knows what he needs to do to win the match and with him I learn a lot.”

Having seen Mourinho collect an enviable haul of trophies over the course of his coaching career – including while at United – Lukaku is hoping that he will benefit from that magic touch during his time at Old Trafford.

He added on his future ambitions, having proved himself as a prolific frontman: “Next up is to win titles.

“It’s the ambition of the club, it is my ambition as well, to be a great player in the history of football. And win more titles. This for me is very important, for me it is a child’s dream, and now I will do everything to fulfil this dream.”

Lukaku has netted 19 times for United in 36 appearances across all competitions this season, with four efforts added to his tally in a productive six-game run since the turn of the calendar year.
