It was déjà vu for Chennaiyin FC striker Jeje Lalpekhua as he lifted the Indian Super League (ISL) title with Chennaiyin FC at the Sree Kanteerava stadium on Saturday.
The Mizoram forward returned to the scene of his I-League triumph with Mohun Bagan on the final day of the 2014-15 season and although he might not have scored any goals on the night, he walked home with the same result.
“I am a striker and our work is to score goals. Tonight I didn’t score but we get to lift the trophy. We worked very hard and helped each other,” Jeje said in the aftermath of Chennaiyin’s 3-2 victory over Bengaluru FC in the finals.
Chennaiyin’s top-scorer saw his side fall behind as early as the ninth minute to a Sunil Chhetri goal but according to him, their victory was never in doubt.
“Yes we could have scored more but for me, when they scored the first goal, I still had confidence. I knew we are going to win because we were here to win the cup. I think everybody did their role well and with hard work, we won the match,” Jeje explained.
While it was a moment to celebrate for the entire Chennaiyin side who had put in a immense shift on the night, Jeje said that the win was sweetest for the fans.
“Oh it’s good because if you win a trophy for the club, it’s amazing for the fans. That is why we won. Of course I am proud like all the Chennaiyin fans who have been coming up to me. This is for all Chennaiyin FC fans. That is the most important thing,” the striker said before signing off to celebrate with the rest of his team-mates.
