Cape Town City sign Keanu Cupido from French club AC Ajaccio

Cape Town City FC have announced the signing of South Africa youth international Keanu Cupido.

The promising central defender has joined the Premier Soccer League (PSL) outfit from French club AC Ajaccio on a permanent deal. 

Cupido had secured a move to Ajaccio last year along with fellow South African youngster Tholang Masegela, with the two players having graduated from the Diambars academy which is based in Boksburg, Gauteng.

The Citizens have since signed Cupido and Karabo Ngwenya, but the latter is expected to feature for the Mother City side in the Multichoice Diski Challenge (MDC) next season .

Ngwenya, who is a striker by trade, was also nurtured in the Diambars academy and he underwent trials in Europe in the past. 

The club announced the signing of the two players on Tuesday morning.

“Cape Town City is delighted to announce the signing of two South African youth internationals, Keanu Cupido and Karabo Ngwenya.”

“The under-20 international defender, Cupido and striker, Ngwenya join the Citizens on long term deals. Cupido will join the first team set up for the 2018/19 season while Karabo the MDC set up,” a club statement read.

“Keanu Cupido joins City from French side AC Ajaccio, after spending two years in Europe. The 20-year-old defender will enter his debut season in the Absa Premiership and we look forward to watching this talent grow,” said the statement.

Cupido, who is a former South Africa under-17 international, featured for Ajaccio’s reserve team in the French National Three League last season and he managed to make 18 appearances for the team.

The talented defender played for Amajimbos at the 2015 Fifa Under-17 World Cup finals in Chile. 

Cupido was also part of the South Africa side that clinched the 2017 Cosafa Under-20 Championship which was hosted by Zambia last December.

He was once on the books of City’s PSL rivals Bidvest Wits.
