Baxter pleased with SuperSport United's progression in Caf Confederation Cup

SuperSport United progressed into the next round of the 2017 Caf Confederation Cup after defeating Madagascan side ASSM Elgeco Plus on Sunday afternoon.

Both teams went into the game with everything to play for as the first leg was played to a goalless stalemate in Madagascar.

Matsatsantsa went ahead early thanks to a penalty by New Zealand international Jeremy Brockie, but Elgeco Plus levelled matters five minutes later.

Nonetheless, 19-year-old Fagrie Lakay scored the decisive goal of the match for the Tshwane-based club. The forward’s first senior goal for the club was enough to seal qualification into the next round, as SuperSport hung on for a 2-1 victory on aggregate.

After the match SuperSport coach Stuart Baxter was relatively pleased with his side's performance.

“We could have scored a lot of goals today but I’m glad most of the players who haven’t played in a while due to injury got a run,” Baxter told the club's Twitter account.

Baxter also confirmed that the club would be releasing South Africa Under-20 internationals Mondli Mpoto and Teboho Mokoena for the upcoming U20 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals in Zambia.

“We will release Mpoto and Mokoena to the (South Africa) under-20 international side. Mokoena played very well today,” Baxter concluded.

SuperSport are now scheduled to take on Sudanese club Al-Ahly Shendi in March in the next round of Confederation Cup.
