    THE BIGGER PICTURE

While United legend and Ten Hag's assistant manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has taken over on an interim basis, the Red Devils will be looking for a permanent replacement and Amorim has been touted as an option. However, the coach has downplayed the speculation about his future, while The Independent reports he does not want to leave his current post during the season.

  • WHAT AMORIM SAID

Asked about the reports linking him to United, Amorim told reporters: "I was expecting that question and obviously I’m not going to talk about the future, because otherwise I’ll always have to comment, so it’s not worth it, I won’t comment. I’m very proud to be the coach of Sporting, that’s all.

"I didn't know about United's interest, if there is any. Quenda is still very young, has few games and it's good that he keeps his feet on the ground. The price is not up to me, it's up to the president. I won't comment on my future."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Amorim had been linked with a move to Liverpool before the club appointed Arne Slot to replace Jurgen Klopp in the summer. The 39-year-old stayed at the Portuguese club, where he has already won two league titles and two Tacas da Liga. He has also been spoken of as a possible successor to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, especially after Sporting CP's director Hugo Viana agreed to become the English giants' new director of football next year.

    WHAT NEXT?

United will have to consider their next step carefully as they look to rescue their season following Ten Hag's departure. Van Nistelrooy will oversee United's Carabao Cup clash against Leicester this week before they face Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday.
