  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Portuguese head coach made the stark comments in the aftermath of the damning 1-0 loss to Spurs in Bilbao, with his United side failing to turn up for the big occasion as their Premier League rivals took the lead late in the first half through Brennan Johnson and successfully defended out the game. Amorim has so far been unable to inspire an improvement since replacing Erik ten Hag in November, leading to questions over his future.

    WHAT AMORIM SAID

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Amorim said: "If the board and fans decide I'm not the right guy I will leave tomorrow without any compensation. But I will not quit." The Red Devils boss added: "We have to deal with this loss. I think it's clear we were the better team but we could not score.

"We didn't perform perfectly today but we were the better team today. There were days when we were really poor but today was not one of those days."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Losing the final was always going to compound a historically bad season for either Man Utd or Spurs, who occupy 16th and 17th in the Premier League table respectively, and it was the Red Devils who were on the wrong end of the result on the night as they failed to salvage their campaign. Tottenham, meanwhile, claimed a first major trophy for 17 years and Champions League qualification.
