Man Utd accept defeat! Red Devils will not appeal Carabao Cup loss to Grimsby despite penalty shootout victors fielding ineligible player

At the centre of the storm is Clark Oduor, the 26-year-old midfielder loaned from Bradford. Oduor made his Mariners debut off the bench and even stepped up in the shoot-out, missing his spot-kick before Grimsby eventually triumphed 12-11. But behind the scenes, paperwork chaos told another story. The club admitted to EFL officials that Oduor’s registration had been submitted one minute past the deadline, rendering him technically ineligible for the tie.

Despite the breach, the EFL opted against the harshest of penalties. Instead, they fined Grimsby £20,000, half of which has been suspended until the end of the season. United had five days to challenge the verdict, yet chose to stay silent. The Sun suggests that a potential reason for this is pushing for reinstatement risked would have left the club open to mockery from rival fans. Some executives feared it would look like United were clutching at straws, trying to reclaim a spot they had lost on the pitch. The club’s hierarchy, already under scrutiny for poor results, ultimately decided it was better to take the blow and 'move on' rather than risk further embarrassment.

While United wrestle with the fallout, Grimsby continue to bask in the glow of one of their greatest nights. The Mariners, cheered on by a raucous Blundell Park crowd, not only beat one of the biggest clubs in the world but did so under the shadow of a paperwork blunder that could have changed everything. Their reward is a third-round clash with Sheffield Wednesday, and they head into it buoyed by the belief that this cup run could become legendary.

Grimsby’s triumph, marred yet magical, will go down in club folklore. Whereas, for United, it is another chapter in a story of decline, one where even when given a lifeline, they refused to take it. The Red Devils will be back in action in the Manchester derby against eternal rivals City on September 14.
