    THE BIGGER PICTURE

While acknowledging Spain's achievement, Mourinho couldn't resist attributing part of their success to himself. He noted his role in the early careers of key players Nacho Fernandez and Alvaro Morata, both of whom he gave senior debuts to during his tenure at Real Madrid. However, Mourinho admitted that he also failed to recognise the potential of another Spanish star, Dani Carvajal, during his stint in the Spanish capital.

  • WHAT MOURINHO SAID

Mourinho, who is now managing Fenerbahce, took to social media and wrote: "2024/Champions League winner captain Nacho Fernandez/European Champion winner captain Alvaro Morata. Many congratulations to them and to the coach who gave them their debut when they were just kids in the Academy 😂😂😂. Same coach who did not understand that Dani Carvajal was another one 😡🤬😀. Many congratulations to Mister De La Fuente for an amazing job. Best team won!"

Under Mourinho's guidance at Real Madrid, Morata made his debut in December 2010 in a 3-1 win over Real Zaragoza in LaLiga. Nacho's first senior appearance came in April 2011 during a 6-3 victory against Valencia. But unlike Morata and Nacho, Carvajal struggled to find playing time under Mourinho and was loaned out to Bayer Leverkusen in the manager's final season at Real Madrid. Carvajal thrived in the Bundesliga, which led to his return to Real Madrid in 2013 under Carlo Ancelotti. Since then, he has become a mainstay in the team, winning six Champions League titles and four La Liga titles.

    WHAT NEXT?

After a successful Euro 2024 campaign, the Spanish stars have headed out on a break. However, Carvajal might make his way to the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday afternoon to attend the unveiling of Kylian Mbappe, which is expected to be a gala affair in a sold-out stadium.
