A new captain for Barcelona? Hansi Flick says decision to strip Marc-Andre ter Stegen of armband is not his and reveals when call will be made

Tension between Barcelona and Ter Stegen has been growing after he was told he will be the third choice goalkeeper following Joan Garcia's arrival. The German's situation worsened when it was decided he would need surgery to solve a back issue. As a result of his struggles, a new captain could be chosen but Flick insists it is not up to him to make that call.

Ter Stegen, who is anticipated to be out for around three months, which could be beneficial for Barca, has seen his position questioned due to both his injury and recent issues with club management. Barcelona’s tradition is for players to vote on their captaincy group shortly before the start of the season, a process Flick confirmed would take place in the coming weeks.

On the Barcelona captaincy and Ter Stegen’s status, Flick said: "The team always decides the captains, as has been the case in the past. Usually two weeks before the start of the season.”

Barcelona’s preseason continues with friendlies against FC Seoul and Daegu FC. They will then face Como in the Joan Gamper Trophy before kicking off the new La Liga campaign.
