  • WHAT HAPPENED?

With Arsenal seeking a win to guarantee automatic progression to the next stage of the Champions League, Danjuma's first-half goal was a real blow. Reserve goalkeeper Neto looked out of his depth as Arnaut Danjuma raced in behind the Gunners' defence, with the 35-year-old debutant rushing out of his box before seeming to change his mind about whether to try to make contact with the ball.

    WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

Reacting to the goal, @Afc_Saks wrote on X: "Neto is actually a*s".

Another supporter, @utd_cappie, wrote: "Nah that goalie isn't a clown , he is a whole circus", with @Stay_unkwn responding: "Nah, look at the space for that pass. What was that?"

@AngeSuperFan added: "Girona score a goal that is CLEARLY offside, even UEFA hate us"

Another fan, @mnuyln wrote: "Neto was outside the box and still tried to catch it with his hands".

  • WHAT ARTETA SAID

Before the match, Arteta commented on first-choice goalkeeper David Raya's absence, telling reporters: "Yeah, he’s not fit. Apart from that, if there is a player who deserves a chance then it’s Neto." In his Gunners debut, things haven't exactly gone to plan.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Replacing Raya is a tall order for any goalkeeper, but Neto faced additional pressure tonight in the dramatic final night of the Champions League's revamped first phase. The 35-year-old Brazilian made his Arsenal debut against Girona, becoming the oldest player to do so in 110 years.

  • WHAT NEXT FOR RAYA?

The Gunners face a huge clash at the top end of the Premier League this weekend, with Arteta's side welcoming champions Manchester City to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday at 4.30pm. The absence of Raya will be a huge blow but Arsenal still have more than enough quality to get the better of Guardiola's side, who have struggled to get anywhere near their own high standards this season.
