Ekuban and Nwakaeme combine to stretch Trabzonspor's unbeaten Super Lig run

Anthony Nwakaeme provided the assist for Caleb Ekuban to seal Trabzonspor's 2-1 win over Genclerbirligi which extended their unbeaten run in the Turkish Super Lig to five matches.

Earlier in the first-half, Ekuban helped Cape Verdean attacker Djaniny Tavares to open the scoring for the visitors at the Eryaman Stadium in the 36th minute.

The 26-year-old has contributed six goals and two assists in 14 league appearances this season while Nwakaeme's assist took his tally to five goals and four assists in 16 matches.

The Nigeria international played the entire duration while Ekuban was replaced in the 80th minute and Djaniny Tavares made way for DR Congo's Benik Afobe, who is on a season-long loan from Stoke City, seven minutes from time.

Togo's Floyd Ayite, Ivory Coast's Giovanni Sio and Senegal's Zargo Toure were the other African stars who featured for Genclerbirligi.

The victory moved Trabzonspor to fifth in the Super Lig table with 33 points from 20 games, and they remain unbeaten this year since they suffered a 2-0 loss against Galatasaray on December 26.

Genclerbirligi, on the other hand, dropped to 18th in the league table with 19 points from 20 matches and they are winless in their last four outings.

Nwakaeme, Ekuban and Afobe will aim to help Trabzonspor, current Turkish Cup champions, win the Super Cup on Wednesday, when they battle defending league champions Istanbul Basaksehir. After that, they travel to Istanbul to face league leaders Besiktas on January 31.
