AFC Asian Cup 2019: How India's opponents Thailand qualified for the finals

Thailand failed to qualify for the previous two Asian Cup finals. Their last appearance came in 2007, where they were co-hosts. This time, they qualified in the first round of their involvement. Serbian tactician Milovan Rajevac, who took Ghana to the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup was appointed in April 2017 to lead the South-east nation's charge in UAE. Thailand were placed in Group F of the 2nd round 2018 FIFA World Cup - 2019 AFC Asian Cup Joint Qualification along with Iraq, Vietnam, Chinese Taipei and Indonesia (who were later suspended and took no part).

12 November 2015 | Rajamangala Stadium, Bangkok | A record 50,000 turned up to see Yaki Yen from the away side take the lead. Teerasil Dangda and Pokklaw Anan swung the balance into Thailand's favour. Hung Kai-Chun made it level but Adisak Kraisorn and Tana Chanabut added two more goals for the hosts to register a win.

Thailand 4-2 Chinese Taipei

24 March 2016 | PAS Stadium, Tehran, Iran | The scoreline was a repeat of the previous tie. Mongkol Tossakrai and Adisak Kraisorn scored for the Thai, Mahdi Kamel and Ali Adnan Kadhim for Iraq. Thailand finished top with 14 points and gained entry to the 2019 Asian Cup and progressed into the next phase of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup. Iraq, who finished second with 12 points also followed suit in the same manner.

Iraq 2-2 Thailand

Japan, Saudi Arabia and Australia booked their tickets to Russia from Group B while Thailand in ten games, could not win even one as they finished last with two points. They faced Iraq again and also UAE, who they co-incidentally drew in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup Group A. Their most enthralling game was a 2-2 draw at home against Asian Cup holders Australia.
