Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David De Gea has revealed he was shocked to be included in Vicente del Bosque’s provisional 30-man World Cup squad.
"The truth is that it was a surprise,” De Gea admitted to Atletico's official website.
“It's a joy that the coach chose me among those 30 players, it’s a pleasure for me, but I know I have to keep working to grow and someday play in the senior team.”
The 19-year-old has shot to prominence as one of world football’s most promising young goalkeepers since capitalising on a dip of form suffered by Atleti’s first choice custodian Sergio Asenjo and has gone on to make over 20 appearances for the club this season.
De Gea went on to reveal he received the call in Hamburg where he is preparing for Atleti’s Europa League final against Fulham on Wednesday, news that made him doubly happy.
“This is great news for me and for all those who have supported me since I joined the club, but especially is a cause that drives me to continue working for the future both Atletico and in the national team.”
