VIDEO: Verratti scores controversial goal against Bastia

One of the great moments of Premier League history came when West Ham’s Paolo Di Canio, faced with an open goal, elected to pick up the ball owing to an injury to Everton goalkeeper Paul Gerrard.

Bastia shot-stopper Jean-Louis Leca would have wished that Di Canio’s compatriot, Marco Verratti, had shown the same level of charitable spirit on Saturday, as Paris Saint-Germain cruised to a 5-0 win over the Corsicans at the Parc des Princes.

PSG were 1-0 up when Leca went to check on the state of Verratti’s team-mate, Blaise Matuidi, who had gone down injured in the box.

The visiting defence seemed to have stopped, too, but without the referee’s whistle having been blown, the midfielder took aim and planted a shot into the top corner of the net, past Leca, who had hastily retreated to his line.
