No one gave us a chance against Enyimba, claims Akwa's Ottobong

Akwa United’s Effiong Ottobong says determination was the key to their success against Enyimba in Sunday’s victory at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.

Musa Newman’s first half goal moved the Promise Keepers five points behind league leaders, Plateau United and the skipper claims no one gave them a chance against the seven-time NPFL champions before the game.

He admitted that the visitors gave them a scare in the second half after they (Akwa) failed to score more than one goal in the first 45 minutes of the keenly contested encounter.

"No one really gave us a chance against Enyimba, but we were determined in our minds to play the game with all our might because we know winning the match will take us up there, and that was the performance that gave us today, we did it right and we got it right," Ottobong told Goal.

"The game was much tougher in the second half, unlike the first half where we had chances to have scored more than one goal in the game.

"Being a local derby, the toughness was expected because even when we played them in Calabar, we were so close to picking a point but they got the win with just a little slip up from us.”

Ottobong believes his side will pick at least a point on the road when they clash against Plateau United in Jos next weekend, just like they did by ending their unbeaten run in the first stanza of the season.
