Mathe: Some senior players have been at Kaizer Chiefs for far too long

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Brian Mathe has said that certain squad members at the club have been in the team for far too long and that at the moment the team lack depth.

“One of the problems that I have is that looking at players like Itu Khune, Siphiwe Tshabalala, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Bernard Parker, Tsepo Masilela, Willard Katsande and Siboniso Gaxa. Those guys have been at Chiefs for far too long and they won championships,” Mathe told Goal.

“Some of them played under Muhsin Ertugral and Vladimir Vermezovic,” he said.

Mathe made the comparison to Pep Guardiola, who will be moving to a Manchester City side packed with quality.

“Chiefs need to have depth and they don’t have.

“Now you bring in a coach and you say to him take over this team and move us forward.

“It’s not your Pep Guardiola where your quality is still there.

The Chiefs legend concluded by saying that the team should have been recycled as everyone expects them to win silverware every season.

“You have to recycle the team. At some point, you need to take out ‘Pa’ Gaxa, at some point you need to take out Morgan Gould.

“Chiefs cannot afford to make wholesale changes like that because they always have to win something.

“Every cup that they lose comes out of their shelf, I tell you it’s not an easy team to coach.

“He (Komphela) has got that pressure where he has lost two cup finals and that on its own is pressure,” Mathe said.
