Diego Maradona is happy to have seen Marek Hamsik take his goal record at Napoli and rewrite the history books, claims the legendary Argentine’s son.

The Slovakian playmaker reached a notable landmark with the Serie A side on Sunday when he found the target in a 3-2 victory over Sampdoria.

That effort was his 116th for the club, edging him one in front of an iconic figure from the past who helped to secure two titles and a UEFA Cup triumph during his time in Naples.

There are not too many players who can claim to have bettered the achievements of Maradona, but the 1986 World Cup winner is pleased to having passed one baton to Hamsik.

Diego Maradona Jr told Goal: “Dad is happy that he has been able to write a story like this.

“Clearly being overtaken in the record books is not cause for celebration up to a certain point, but he is certainly happy for Marek because he is somebody who deserves it.”

Maradona flourished at Napoli during his playing days, as he found somewhere prepared to embrace his enigmatic talent, and he sees similarities in Hamsik.

“He cares about everything that is Naples: the city, the team, the people,” added his son.

“Regarding the record, he left his own legacy and now that has been passed to very good hands.

“Hamsik married into Napoli for better or for worse, as my father did at the time.

“I am overjoyed that if this record had to go to somebody, then Marek is the one to take it.

“Marek will forever be remembered by those who love Naples. I don’t know if he can mark a generation as my father did as it is more difficult to do that now, but he means a lot to Napoli fans.”

Hamsik’s efforts this season have helped to keep Napoli in title contention, with the club topping Serie A at Christmas, and Maradona Jr believes they can sustain a challenge.

He added: “This year there is a new element to the team and a belief that they can fight to the end.

“I have not seen a team stronger than Napoli. Inter and Juventus have been to the San Paolo and parked the bus.”

Maradona Jr also revealed that he intends to pass his Napoli passion onto his own son, with 2018 set to see a legendary family welcome another new addition – Diego Matias.
