Gonzalo Higuain has set a new Serie A record by becoming the highest ever goal scorer in a single season.
The Argentina international scored a hat trick in Napoli’s 4-0 win over Frosinone to reach 36 goals for the season, which puts him one ahead of Gunnar Nordahl’s total which he registered with AC Milan in the 1949-50 campaign.
Higuain comfortably finishes as Serie A’s top goal scorer this season, with Paulo Dybala his nearest challenger with 19 goals for Juventus.
But despite the striker’s record-breaking haul, Napoli still finished nine points behind champion Juventus, which won Serie A for a fifth consecutive season.
But finishing second means Napoli has automatically secured a place in next season’s Champions League, while third-place Roma will have to reach the group stages via the playoffs.
