There was an overwhelming reaction of joy from England themselves, but here's how South African fans followed the result.
England drew 1-1 with Colombia after extra time, before the game was decided on penalties.
There are many England fans in South Africa, a country that has English as one of their official languages and has a large population of British who moved from the United Kingdom to South Africa over the last century.
Then there's many other football fans in the country, who simply follow the English Premier League on television and love the England stars. Here's how the media, famous PSL players, legends and fans reacted to England's progress on Tuesday night.

I’m so happy for England #three lions— Molemo Mekoa (@Mantistew) July 3, 2018
Colombia refocused and by so doing they got a goal, lesson learned is don't use all your energy on what happened because that can derail you from your mission/objective.— Marks Maponyane (@MarksMaponyane) July 3, 2018

No mum, I’m not coming home. It’s... pic.twitter.com/VdFHVoEfTI— Jesse Lingard (@JesseLingard) July 3, 2018
Lampard & Gerrard were criticized for years, but in the England attacking midfield areas Raheem Sterling & Dele Alli were quite anonymous v Colombia. Not much created, didn't threaten with shots... Southgate should've selected Lallana for the bench. Not fully fit? Neither is Alli— Ignat Football (@IgnatFootball) July 3, 2018
That's good coaching, Southgate is making right decisions.— Marks Maponyane (@MarksMaponyane) July 3, 2018
Right ! I’m going home to watch it coming home— Peter Crouch (@petercrouch) July 3, 2018
Well done to all the teams who have reached the quarter finals...Who is your favourite to go on to lift the trophy.????— Mark Fish (@markfish74) July 4, 2018
Congrats England! It's the least impressive #ENG I've seen but their team spirit is better and they've done very well to reach the last 8. I would improve them in the wide attacking areas by starting Rashford and using Sterling wider. Otherwise they'd have to win 3 more shootouts— Ignat Football (@IgnatFootball) July 3, 2018
