The 24-year-old lasted just a little over half an hour against the Black Cats after being caught in the ankle by Didier Ndong and was substituted with Divock Origi.

Ndong snapped into a challenge with the Brazilian and caught him in the ankle, with the forward spending the next few moments splayed on the field before referee Anthony Taylor allowed for a stretcher to be brought on.

Liverpool medics then deduced that Coutinho, who Sunderland had kept quiet till that point, was unable to continue and carried him off the pitch with his right ankle secured in a brace, as Jurgen Klopp sent on Origi in his place.

The Reds boss will be hoping that the injury to his form player - who has contributed five goals and five assists in the team's Premier League title bid this season - is not too serious ahead of the busy festive period.
