Chancel Mbemba ends frustrating Newcastle United spell to join FC Porto

Chancel Mbemba has ended his frustrating stint with Newcastle United after joining Portuguese champions Porto for an undisclosed fee in a three-year deal.

The DR Congo international joined the Magpies from Anderlecht in 2015, and came in as a 'proven performer at the highest level', according to former manager Steve McClaren, referring to his exploits in the Belgian top-flight - and Europe.

And while he was ever-present in Newcastle's disastrous 2015-16 Premier League campaign, playing 33 times as they were relegated to the Championship, his final two seasons saw him rack a meagre 21 league [both Championship and EPL] appearances, with Rafael Benitez handing his only game in 2018 in an FA Cup fourth-round loss against Chelsea in January.

The versatile defender, 23, will now look to get his once promising career back on track at the Estádio do Dragão, and might get to start the journey against his immediate former employers as Benitez's men visit Porto for a pre-season friendly on Saturday.
