Champions League stadiums that have frustrated Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi is one of the most gifted goalscorers in the history of football, but even the Barcelona man can have the occasional 'off night' when he fails to find the net.

One competition in which the Argentine has excelled is the Champions League and he is second only to Cristiano Ronaldo in the all-time top scorers list with 97 goals in 119 games.

During his career, Messi has graced and scored in countless stadia across the world, but there are some places in particular that are not happy hunting grounds.

After he failed to score against Olympiakos in Piraeus, Goal takes a look at the elusive Champions League venues that have left Messi frustrated since he first played in the tournament in 2005.

Without a doubt, the United Kingdom is not a country that Messi is particularly adept at scoring in and his most frustrating venue to play in has been Stamford Bridge. Remarkably, Messi has been kept scoreless in four games against Chelsea at the stadium.

Elsewhere in the UK, Messi struggled during a visit to Manchester United's ground Old Trafford, Anfield, home of Liverpool, and also in Scotland, where he failed to score against Rangers at Ibrox when Barca played there 10 years ago in 2007.

Interestingly, Greece has proven to be a problematic place to go for the 30-year-old and, in addition to the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium, Messi also failed to penetrate the goal against Panathinaikos in 2005. He did, however, score against Panathinaikos in 2010 at the OAKA Spiros Louis.

Bayern Munich have managed to keep the shackles on Messi at the Allianz Arena on three occasions, while Atletico Madrid did so twice at their old stadium the Vicente Calderon.

Below is the full list of away/neutral Champions League venues that Lionel Messi has not scored in (supplied by Opta).

Note: The above list denotes away/neutral venues in which Lionel Messi has never scored and the number of games he has played there. So, for example, Messi has scored at the Giuseppe Meazza against AC Milan, but not against Inter, and he has scored at the Stadio Olimpico against Manchester United, but not against Roma. The Argentine has scored away to Panathinaikos, but that game, on November 24, 2010, was played at the OAKA Spiros Louis. Messi also failed to score during his one trip to the Olympiastadion - the home of German side Hertha Berlin - but on that occasion he faced Juventus in the 2015 Champions League final.
