Champions League permutations: What Spurs, Milan & every team needs to reach last 16

The final matchday of the 2022-23 UEFA Champions League is all set to rumble with a couple of European heavyweights yet to seal a spot in the round of 16. Many of the usual suspects have already qualified for the round of 16 which include Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool, PSG and Real Madrid.

However, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Juventus have prematurely crashed out, and there are still heavyweights such as Tottenham Hotspur and AC Milan who have a job to do to survive in the elite club competition.

GOAL takes a comprehensive look at all the permutations and combinations by which every team might reach the round of 16.

Which teams have qualified for the Champions League last 16?

So far, 12 teams including holders Real Madrid, Bayern, Man City, Napoli and surprise package Club Brugge have secured their passage to the knockout stage. However, five of the the eight group winners - who will be among the seeded teams for the round of 16 draw- are yet to be decided.

The runners-up from each group will constitute the unseeded teams.

  • Napoli: The Serie A outfit has already confirmed their spot in the knockouts. However, they are yet to be confirmed as group winners. If they do not lose by four goals or more to Liverpool, they will be end as group leaders.
  • Liverpool: The Reds need to beat Napoli by four goals or more to finish on top of the group.
  • Ajax: Eliminated.
  • Rangers: Eliminated.

  • Sporting CP: They will progress if they do not lose to Frankfurt.  They will finish first if they win and Tottenham do not. Sporting will finish third and drop into the Europa League knockout round play-offs if both they and Marseille lose.
  • Frankfurt: The Bundesliga side can still qualify if they win against Sporting. They will finish first if they win and Spurs do not. Frankfurt will finish third if both games are drawn, or if both they and Marseille lose.
  • Marseille: The French outfit will qualify if they win against Tottenham. They will finish first if they win and the other game is drawn. They will finish third and fall into the Europa League knockout round play-offs if they draw and Sporting lose.
