VARchester United! Have Solskjaer's side really been helped by referees?

Not since the days of Sir Alex Ferguson have we heard so much talk about Manchester United getting preferential treatment off referees.

Social media has been running wild with talk of 'VARchester United' and 'Man Utd Penalty Bingo' because of how many spot-kicks Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side have been awarded this season.

However, even Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has voiced his concern over the number of decisions that seem to be going United's way.

But are United really receiving help from the officials?

Below, we review all 19 penalties awarded to the Red Devils this season to see whether there's anything to these conspiracy theories...

  • Fernandes Chelsea penaltyGetty

1FA Cup: Man Utd 1-3 Chelsea

Callum Hudson-Odoi blatantly tripped Martial as United tried in vain to get themselves back into the semi-final showdown at Wembley.  Fernandes fired home but it was little more than a consolation goal for United as their hopes of FA Cup glory went up in smoke.

2Premier League MD34: Aston Villa 0-3 Man Utd

The most controversial decision of the season? It was certainly a historic one, as United equalled the record for most penalties received in a single Premier League season (13). Jon Moss pointed to the spot after Fernandes had been upended by Ezri Konsa in the area. However, on closer inspection, it emerged that the attacking midfielder had actually initiated the contact. However, VAR inexplicably agreed with Moss, clearing the way for Fernandes to open the scoring. Villa boss Dean Smith called it a "disgraceful" decision and his fury was understandable.

    Verdict: NO PENALTY!

    3Premier League MD33: Man Utd 5-2 Bournemouth

The game at Old Trafford was tied at one goal apiece when Mike Dean pointed to the spot in the 35th minute, after noticing an Adam Smith handball. Rashford took care of the rest as United went on to record an impressive victory.

    Verdict: PENALTY!

  • Pogba Fernandes Manchester UnitedGetty

    4Premier League MD30: Tottenham 1-1 Man Utd

Eric Dier was bamboozled by Paul Pogba's neat footwork and bundled the Frenchman over in the box. Fernandes scored from the spot to salvage a point for United.

    Verdict: PENALTY!

N.B. Jon Moss awarded United a penalty in the dying minutes for another perceived foul on Pogba by Dier but the referee was correctly overruled by VAR.

5Europa League: Man Utd 5-0 Club Brugge

During the round-of-32 clash at Old Trafford, James saw a shot blocked by Simon Deli’s hand. The Ivorian defender was shown a straight red and Fernandes tucked away the resulting spot-kick.

    6Premier League MD27: Man Utd 3-0 Watford

Ben Foster raced off his line and brought down Fernandes. There were no complaints from the former United keeper, who admitted after the game that he had simply been beaten to the ball, after underestimating the pace of the Portuguese. Fernandes coolly sent Foster the wrong way for his first United goal.

    Verdict: PENALTY!

  • Mason Greenwood Manchester United 2019-20Getty Images

7FA Cup: Tranmere 0-6 Man Utd

Solskjaer’s side were 5-0 up by half time at Prenton Park, so it's not as if they needed any help from the officials. In addition, there was no doubt about the decision to award the visitors a penalty when Tranmere goalkeeper Scott Davies took out Tahith Chong in the area. Greenwood slotted home United’s sixth goal of the afternoon.

    Verdict: PENALTY!

  • Marcus Rashford Man Utd 2019Getty Images

    8Premier League MD22: Man Utd 4-0 Norwich

Rashford marked his 200th appearance for United with two goals, one of which came from the penalty spot. The hosts were already 1-0 up when Williams was brought down in the box by Norwich goalkeeper Krul. It was an easy decision for Anthony Taylor.

    Verdict: PENALTY!

  • Juan Mata Manchester United 2019-20Getty Images

9Europa League: Man Utd 4-0 AZ

This was a case of Mason Greenwood proving too quick for the AZ defence. The youngster burst into the area and was fouled by Jordy Claise. Juan Mata stepped up to score United’s third of the evening.

    Verdict: PENALTY!

    10Premier League MD16: Man City 1 -2 Man Utd

11Premier League MD 15: Man Utd 2-1 Tottenham

Moussa Sissoko brought Rashford down 90 seconds into the second half and, after a very lengthy delay for a VAR check, Paul Tierney was backed by the video officials, allowing Rashford to fire home from 12 yards out.

    Verdict: PENALTY!

  • Tim Krul Anthony MartialGetty

    13Premier League MD10: Norwich 1-3 Man Utd

In the very same game, the VAR officials intervened again after Attwell had failed to notice Todd Cantwell handling a shot from Fred. Martial took over the penalty-taking duties from Rashford but Krul produced another fine stop.

    Verdict: PENALTY!

  • Ben Godfrey Daniel James Norwich vs Man Utd 2019-20Getty Images

    14Premier League MD10: Norwich 1-3 Man Utd

For all the complaints about VAR awarding Manchester United penalties, there have been just three instances of the video officials overruling the referee's initial decision. The first of those came against Norwich. Stuart Atwell waved away calls for a penalty after Ben Godfrey tangled with Daniel James in the area but, after a lengthy VAR deliberation, a penalty was given. It was the wrong call, given the contact was minimal, so justice was done when Tim Krul saved Rashford's spot-kick.

    Verdict: NO PENALTY!

  • Anthony Martial Manchester United 2019-20Getty Images

15Europa League: Partizan Belgrade 0-1 Man Utd

Martial decided this group-stage clash in the visitors' favour, after a rampaging Brandon Williams had clearly been fouled by Nemanja Miletic.

    Verdict: PENALTY!

  • Marcus Rashford Manchester United 2019-20Getty Images

    16Premier League MD5: Man Utd 1-0 Leicester

Rashford scored the only goal of the game after being tripped by Leicester defender Caglar Soyuncu just eight minutes in. Brendan Rodgers described the penalty as "soft" but his centre-back clearly caught the United forward. Martin Atkinson was right to point to the spot.

    Verdict: PENALTY!

  • Rashford Palace penalty missGetty

17Premier League MD3: Man Utd 1-2 Crystal Palace

Three games, three penalties for United. This time, Scott McTominay was tripped by Luka Milivojevic, after a great run into the box by the midfielder. Rashford couldn’t take advantage, though, as he missed the target. And, despite Daniel James' late equaliser, United were undone by an injury-time winner from Patrick van Aanholt.

    Verdict: PENALTY!

  • Paul Pogba, Wolves vs Man Utd, 2019-20Getty

    18Premier League MD2: Wolves 1-1 Man Utd

United were given a penalty for the second league game in succession. Paul Pogba went rushing towards goal and drew a foul from Conor Coady inside the area. There were no complaints from the Wolves defender. However, Pogba’s spot-kick was pushed away by Rui Patricio, meaning United had to settle for a 1-1 draw at Molineux.

    Verdict: PENALTY!

  • Marcus Rashford Man Utd vs Chelsea 2019-20Getty Images

    19Premier League MD1: Man Utd 4-0 Chelsea

Kurt Zouma was punished for a clumsy challenge on Marcus Rashford. The United forward went on a surging run into the area and the centre-back got nowhere near the ball. Anthony Taylor pointed to the spot and Rashford converted the resulting penalty to open the scoring.

    Verdict: PENALTY!
