Awkward! New Man Utd CEO Omar Berrada - who Red Devils poached from rivals City - hasn't deleted historic 'mess' tweet that criticised his new club

The Red Devils have poached City's chief operating officer Berrada as their new CEO. But just hours after this news emerged, Barcelona's former senior media business development manager and head of sponsorship may have landed in an awkward situation. That's because X users have found a tweet Berrada made in 2014, after Sir Alex Ferguson had left the club and successor David Moyes was days away from being sacked, where he quoted a Guardian headline that reads, 'Manchester United: how did they get into this mess?' At the time of writing, the tweet has not been deleted.

While the optics on this are not particularly good, United may be recruiting someone who is best in class for this CEO role. Sir Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS, who completed a £1.25 billion minority takeover of the club late last year, want to improve United on and off the pitch and this move could kickstart that process. Berrada, who has worked closely with City's director of football Txiki Begiristain on transfers and contracts, is currently the CFO at City Football Group - which ultimately owns City and other teams across the planet. This move was also reportedly given the seal of approval by United majority owners, the Glazer family.

It may just be a matter of time before Berrada, who reportedly turned down offers to take up chief executive roles at a Premier League club, MLS teams, and a major NFL franchise last summer, begins this new position at United.
