Friday pressure briefing: Liverpool can't let top four slip now

Liverpool can be forgiven for having forgotten.

With a UEFA Champions League final on the horizon, it’s likely fairly difficult to give domestic responsibilities one’s full attention.

But one win in their last five matches has brought cause for concern, and last week’s defeat to fifth-placed Chelsea leaves the Reds requiring to give Brighton their full concentration this weekend.

With a healthy lead in goal difference over Chelsea, a point will seal Liverpool’s Champions League qualification for next season regardless of their fate against Real Madrid later this month.

But slip up, and Chelsea will be ready to pounce. Antonio Conte’s men head north to face Newcastle knowing they’re unbeaten in their last four Premier League meetings against the Magpies (W3 D1), netting 12 goals in the process.

After a run of three successive away defeats, Chelsea have won their last three Premier League games on the road, each by a one-goal margin.

And Benitez has yet to win a Premier League game against a club he used to manage, drawing three and losing one against Liverpool, and losing against Chelsea in the reverse fixture (1-3).

Liverpool, meanwhile, have won five of their last six meetings with Brighton in all competitions (D1), netting 22 goals across these six games (3.7 per game).

And the Reds are unbeaten in their last 21 home league games against promoted sides (W16 D5), since a 1-2 loss vs Blackpool in 2010-11.

Moreover, Mohamed Salah needs just one goal to set a new record for most Premier League goals in a 38-game season (currently 31).

Salah, the Football Writers’ and Players’ Player of the Year, will be keen to find the net to ensure he completes a clean sweep of season awards by taking the Golden Boot.

Tottenham’s Harry Kane is three goals behind the Egyptian going into the final fixture of the season.

The stakes are high. The pressure is on.
