As the season reaches its halfway point across the continent, Goal puts together an XI of the best the top leagues have to offer

The first half of the 2017-18 campaign has consisted of some incredible performances from Europe's top stars.

As competition among the continent's leagues heats up, the best players are making themselves known as they battle for silverware.

Now around the halfway mark of the campaign, Goal has put together an XI of the best performers across the top divisions so far.

  1. #1 David de Gea

It's hard to imagine where Manchester United might be without the Spaniard's safe hands in goal. His remarkable display against Arsenal was just one of several for a side that has underwhelmed at times this season and he is simply irreplaceable for Jose Mourinho's team.
  2. #2 Dani Alves

Paris Saint-Germain have been vindicated for making a late push to snap up the Brazilian right-back ahead of Manchester City in the summer. The 34-year-old has been impressive in the first-half of the season in both an attacking and defensive sense and shows few signs of slowing down in a Ligue 1 side otherwise full of energetic and bright young players.
  3. #3 Martin Skriniar

One of the signings of the summer transfer window, the centre-back has carried on his impressive Sampdoria displays to cement himself as a star in the ambitious Nerazzurri side. A strong tackler who is quick to make clearances, the 22-year-old Slovakia international is central to their hopes of challenging for the Serie A title this term, arguably just as much as star striker Mauro Icardi.
  4. #4 Gerard Pique

The 30-year-old defender remains an ever-present in Barcelona's first-team and a reliable presence at the back. The Spanish side have one of the most reliable back lines in Europe at the moment, having conceded just seven goals in La Liga and one in the Champions League, and Pique has been key to maintaining their awesome record.
  5. #5 Philipp Max

The Augsburg left-back tops the Bundesliga assist charts this season with nine and has scored one of his own, too, meaning he has contributed directly to over a third of their goals. Tearing up and down the left side, the 24-year-old has been a joy to watch for a team sitting mid-table.
  6. #6 David Silva

As classy as ever, the Spain international has been a vital cog for Premier League leaders Manchester City, scoring five times and setting up a further 10.
  7. #7 Luis Alberto

A revelation in Serie A, the Lazio midfielder is having the season of his career as a consistent creator and central figure in their early rise to the top of the table. His recent dip in form has coincided with the Rome side's own run of poor results, showing just how important he can be to a side intent on making it into the Champions League next year.
  8. #8 Kevin De Bruyne

Targeting Premier and Champions League dominance this season, Belgium star De Bruyne is a real star for Pep Guardiola's Manchester City. The most creative player in the English top flight, he has established himself as one of the best players in the world and seems to become more important every week for the continent's most devastating team.
  9. #9 Mohamed Salah

The Egypt international has been sensational since joining from Roma in the summer. The 22 goals he has directly contributed to - 17 goals and five assists - is more than almost half of the league's teams have scored in total. The 25-year-old has been the perfect addition to play alongside Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane and will have a huge say in the conclusion to their domestic Premier and Champions League campaign.
  10. #10 Harry Kane

The Tottenham striker is in the middle of yet another incredible season. He continues to break records and, with 18 goals from 19 games in the English top flight along with a further six in five Champions League appearances, his stature is constantly increasing. Speculation of a £200 million move to Real Madrid will not be dying down any time soon at this rate.
  11. #11 Kylian Mbappe

The 19-year-old's impact at Paris Saint-Germain since making the big move from Monaco in the close season has been incredible and he has further established himself as the brightest young player around. Neymar may be the big star in Parc des Princes at the moment, but Mbappe looks even better at times with his classy performances in Ligue 1 and the Champions League. Mbappe has eight goals and as many assists in the French top flight with another four and three respectively in Europe.

  12. #12 The full XI

And here's how they line up...
