Slot on the brink: Top-five hopes hanging by a thread

  1. Frank's gone - but Spurs need more changes to avoid the drop

Tottenham Hotspur sit 16th in the Premier League table. They are only five points clear of the relegation zone. Zero wins from nine domestic games in 2026. Their next match is against north-London neighbours Arsenal, the Premier League champions-elect whom Spurs have beaten just once in their last 10 meetings. And yet, until Wednesday morning, there seemed to be very little alarm around the club that this is a season that could very well end in disaster.

  2. Bernardo back to his best as summer exit from City nears

There is no shortage of ways to describe Bernardo Silva. A daring dribbler; a sleek passer; a relentless presser; the engine of Manchester City’s field, as well as its brain. But Erling Haaland managed to sum up the City captain's attitude in brilliantly simple terms after master-minding their stunning comeback win against Liverpool: 'Let’s have it!'

  3. January transfers have made Man Utd a UWCL threat

Manchester United simply had to act in the January transfer window. The Red Devils had enjoyed a wonderful start to the 2025-26 season, most notably qualifying for the Women's Champions League proper for the first time and then going one further by putting themselves in this month's knockout rounds. But if they wanted to be competitive against Europe's best, and at the sharp end of domestic competitions, they needed more in the squad - and that's the approach United took.

  4. Chelsea blow it! Palmer magic undone by defensive disasterclass

Chelsea failed to win a Premier League match under Liam Rosenior for the first time as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Leeds United on Tuesday. The Blues were comfortably the better team for much of the contest and even led by two goals in the second half, but a series of defensive errors saw them throw away a victory which would have massively boosted their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.

  5. Get Mainoo on the plane! Tuchel mustn't make Amorim's mistake

If Ruben Amorim had stayed in charge of Manchester United, Kobbie Mainoo would be speaking to prospective clubs right now about leaving - if he hadn't departed already. Instead, the homegrown midfielder is thriving under Michael Carrick and looks every bit United’s present as well as its future. With every game he plays, Mainoo is making Amorim’s decision to disregard his talent seem all the more ridiculous.

  1. Tottenham SACK Frank after dismal eight-game winless run

Tottenham have taken the decision to sack manager Thomas Frank after a dismal run of eight games without a win. The Dane only took charge of the team in the summer but has overseen a dreadful campaign in the Premier League. Tuesday's 2-1 home defeat to Newcastle saw Spurs booed off the pitch again by supporters and leaves the team just five points above the relegation zone.

  2. Greenwood loses his mentor as De Zerbi leaves Marseille

Marseille have announced that manager Roberto De Zerbi has left the club by mutual consent in the wake of Sunday's 5-0 thrashing by champions Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1. De Zerbi guided Marseille to a second-placed finish in Ligue 1 last season but leaves with his team down in fourth place in the table and already 12 points behind Luis Enrique's table-toppers.

  3. Anderson or Wharton to replace Casemiro at Man Utd?

Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton are the two players Manchester United should be targeting to replace Casemiro in the summer, according to a Champions League-winning former Red Devils' star. Casemiro has overcome fierce criticism to play a crucial role in United's unbeaten start under Michael Carrick, although his resurgent displays have not been enough to earn him a new contract.

  4. Why Liverpool are stalling in push for €100m-rated Diomande

Liverpool are holding off from making a transfer move for RB Leipzig star Yan Diomande due to contractual complications. The Reds are thought to be keen on the 19-year-old Ivory Coast international, who has scored seven Bundesliga goals so far this season, but the Merseysiders will wait to make their play due to some uncertainty over his personal situation. RB Leipzig reportedly value Diomande at €100 million (£87.15m/$118m), with the German side not looking to sell him unless a truly lucrative offer arrives.

This is the Premier League

  1. Ranked: Frank's potential Tottenham successors

Thomas Frank is gone! The morning after a terrible night before, Tottenham Hotspur announced that the Dane had been relieved of his duties as head coach - to nobody's great surprise. Tuesday evening's 2-1 loss at home to fellow underperformers Newcastle extended Tottenham's winless run in the Premier League to eight games - a rotten run of results that has seen them plummet to 16th in the standings.

Queens of football 👑

  1. Mead ruled out of Arsenal's crucial Champions League clash

England star Beth Mead will miss the first leg of Arsenal's crucial Champions League play-off clash with OH Leuven on Wednesday night in one of two big absences for the Gunners. The Lionesses forward was seen in a protective boot after victory over Manchester City on Sunday and the concerns that raised amongst fans have now been justified, with her missing out on Arsenal's trip to Belgium.

  2. Aluko accuses Woods of 'gaslighting' as public row escalates

The public war of words between Eni Aluko and Laura Woods has continued, with the former England international hitting back at the ITV and TNT Sports presenter. Aluko has recently said her path towards punditry roles in the women's game has been blocked by England and Arsenal legend Ian Wright, leading to Woods quipping that "caps don't win automatic work". Now, Aluko has claimed Woods' comments have left her feeling "gaslit".

  3. Aluko aims ANOTHER dig at Wright over Lionesses pundit selection

Eni Aluko has renewed her public criticism of the choice of male pundits in women's football, aiming a dig towards Ian Wright and Nedum Onuoha for their TV roles covering the Lionesses' Euro 2025 final at ITV and the BBC, respectively. This is not the first time that Aluko has called out a perceived lack of opportunities for female pundits, criticising Wright in the past for his prominent place within the women's game before issuing a public apology for her words.

Superstars of the future

  1. Why Italy are desperate to cap Atalanta's new wonderkid

Honest Ahanor is just 17 years old - and yet on Sunday he started his fifth successive game for Atalanta, against Como. Unfortunately, Ahanor's afternoon came to an abrupt end - and quite literally by his own hand. Just eight minutes into the game at Sinigaglia, the defender was involved in an innocuous, off-the-ball clash with Maxi Perrone, who shamelessly collapsed to the ground as if Ahanor had struck him in the face.

  2. Why Chelsea fought off Man Utd & Liverpool to sign teen Alao

Another transfer window and another highly-rated prospect is on their way to Chelsea. The club's youth policy has struck again, with the west Londoners landing 17-year-old full-back Yisa Alao from financially troubled Sheffield Wednesday. Despite his very limited experience at senior level, the teenager provoked a transfer tug-of-war between three Premier League giants, but it is the Blues who have emerged victorious.

The Chaaaaaampions 🎶

  1. 'Europa League isn't enough!' - Pochettino flirts with Tottenham return

Mauricio Pochettino has once again indicated that he wants to return to Tottenham as he claimed their recent achievements are "not enough" for a club of that stature. Despite his current commitments with the United States national team, the Argentine said his ultimate ambition is to win the Champions League and Premier League, placing them above achieving World Cup glory in his current role.

  2. Disaster for Real Madrid as Rodrygo's UCL ban is extended

Real Madrid’s Champions League campaign has suffered a significant blow after Rodrygo was handed an extended two-match suspension by UEFA. The Brazilian was sent off during a dramatic 4-2 defeat to Benfica, and his punishment ensures he will miss both legs of the upcoming knockout play-off rematch against the Portuguese giants. With stars like Jude Bellingham also sidelined, head coach Alvaro Arbeloa faces a major tactical crisis.

  3. Future winner? Yamal responds to Ballon d’Or question

Lamine Yamal finished as runner-up in the 2025 Ballon d’Or vote and the Barcelona wonderkid insists that winning a Golden Ball is not something that he gives much thought to. The talented teenager would prefer to focus on collective trophy targets at Camp Nou, rather than individual accolades, with there still plenty for him to try and achieve in 2026.

MUNDIAL

Hall of Fame

  1. Hall of Fame: How Platini became 'The King'

Michel Platini is undoubtedly one of the greatest footballers of all time. Playmaker, assister, goal-scorer: Platini was a complete player, capable of leaving an indelible mark on world football between the late 1970s and mid-1980s. He was the perfect No.10, embodying the true essence of the shirt number both then and now.

  2. Hall of fame Roberto Carlos

Hall of Fame: Roberto Carlos - the greatest full-back in history

Modernising the role of a full-back 30 years ago, Roberto Carlos undoubtedly set the benchmark. A tactical genius and a physical specimen, the Real Madrid and Brazil legend won countless trophies at club and international level, contributing bucket loads of goals and assists. No one in the past, present or future can ever claim to be his equal - he was that good.

  3. Hall of Fame: Why Beckham is such an underrated player

One of the best midfielders of his era, perhaps the greatest crosser of a football ever and a free-kick taker to rival the best the game has ever produced, David Beckham was a special player to say the least. And yet due to his off-field impact, one of the sport's great champions of the past 30 years is generally forgotten when it comes to referencing the true legends of the game.

  4. Hall of Fame: Romario - Brazil's penalty-box panther

Romario moved around the penalty area with the stealthy gait and sly gaze of a panther, ready to suddenly accelerate as soon as the ball came his way, to disorient the opposing defenders with a couple of feints, to pounce on the ball, which inevitably ended up at his feet, as if magnetised, and finish with an unstoppable shot of pure technique or power, or alternatively serve up a perfect assist for one of his team-mates. He was a Hall of Fame striker if ever there was one.

Rebel United

  1. Mario Basler

Rebel United: Bayern icon who got drunk before the UCL final

Teddy Sheringham. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. "Football, bloody hell!" The 1999 Champions League final is one of the greatest dramas in the history of Bayern Munich. The German giants led for a long time in Barcelona before Manchester United snatched the trophy they thought was theirs in stoppage time. But according to one member of the Bayern team, he actually won that final. "Actually, I'm a Champions League winner," claims the latest member of GOAL's Rebel United, Mario Basler.

  2. George Best

Rebel United: George Best - Man Utd's 'fifth Beatle'

In 1969, at the age of 23, George Best wanted to focus solely on the essentials. Just football, just his job. So he turned his back on his two other great passions, alcohol and women. His sobering conclusion: "It was the worst 20 minutes of my life." A Manchester United legend, that quote sums up Bet's rebellious attitude towards football, and life in general.

  3. Rebel United: Mekhloufi's sacrifice for Algerian independence

"La France, c'est vous." Translated as 'France, is you', that was what French president Charles de Gaulle told footballer Rachid Mekhloufi in 1968. Mekhloufi had just led his Saint-Etienne side to the double, and the reward was an audience with the most powerful man in the country. For Mekhloufi, this sentence brought things full circle. Now he was both Algerian and French; 10 years earlier, he had - in a sense - been neither.

Hidden Gems FC

  1. Hidden Gems FC: Roefs' rise to Premier League star

Robin Roefs' story reads like a fairy tale. The 22-year-old goalkeeper is only in his second season as a first-choice shot-stopper, and yet he is already considered one of the better No.1s in the Premier League. A place in the Netherlands' starting line-up at the World Cup is now not out of the question for the latest of GOAL's Hidden Gems.

  2. Hidden Gems FC: The rise of N'Golo Kante

On September 15, 2018, N'Golo Kante walked off the Stamford Bridge pitch, satisfied. As was often the case, the Frenchman had just covered every blade of grass over the course of the 90 minutes. And, as was so often the case, he was not one of the major speaking points at full-time. Not right away, at least.

  3. Hidden Gems FC: Drogba, Toni & football's top 10 late bloomers

Anyone that manages to carve out a career for themselves in professional football is ridiculously talented. The standard at the highest level is just so high that it is simply impossible to 'fake it 'til you make it'. However, not everyone is as prodigiously gifted as Lionel Messi or Lamine Yamal. Your average player will require some time to get to grips with the rigours of the elite game.
