Councillors in the South African city of Cape Town unanimously voted in support of the new name for the World Cup stadium previously known as Green Point Stadium, considering the fact that it is situated in the Green Point suburb.
According to the Cape Argus newspaper, the panel considered 302 proposals for the new name but in the end Cape
Town Stadium beat names like Dome of Storms, Foot of Africa, Saartjie
Baartman, Table Top, Motherdrome, Rainbow International Stadium and the
South Easter.
The city's 2010 spokesman, Pieter Cronje, said the city recognised the Xhosa and Afrikaans equivalent of Cape Town Stadium.
Cronje said the name was unifying and inclusive of all the city's residents.
