Player Ratings: AC Milan 2-3 Manchester United

Dida: 5 - Should have done better with the first goal, as Scholes' effort lacked any power whatsoever. Flapped at a number of crosses and generally looked uncertain.

Bonera: 6.5 - Composed at right back as he made some important challenges and also got forward, but he was outjumped by Rooney for the second goal.

Nesta: 5.5 - He will be disappointed with his marking for the first goal, and Manchester United got into the penalty area far more easily than they should have done on a number of occasions.

Thiago Silva: 6.5 - Made some of his trademark runs into the opposition half that caused problems for their defence, and was the stronger of the two centre backs.

Antonini: 6.5 - Looked to support Pato on the overlap and should have doubled the lead when he burst into the area. Substituted before half time due to injury.

Beckham: 4.5 - With the exception of a handful of free kicks, one of which led to the goal, he was very quiet. Seemed as though he didn't want to play against his former side - but surely not?

Pirlo: 6 - Sitting deep to cover the runs of Park, which he did effectively in the first half. Once Manchester United's ball retention improved in the second half he was far less influential.

Ambrosini: 7 - Supported Huntelaar as best he could and looked to move the ball on quickly to the front three. Often had to cover Favalli as neither Ronaldinho nor Pato showed any inclination to help out in defence.

Pato: 5.5 - Started very brightly as he gave Evra the runaround for the entire first half, but was simply anonymous in the second period.

Huntelaar: 4.5 - He had a couple of opportunities in the first half to put serious pressure on the English side, but he passed them up and the Rossoneri will be rueing the missed chances.

Ronaldinho: 7 - Slightly fortunate to score after it came off Carrick. We saw both sides of 'Dinho' tonight as he flew at the visitors' defence in the first half before becoming far more peripheral in the second.

Favalli: 4.5 - Helpless to do anything when Valencia ran at him. Lacks the legs to play at left back any more and Manchester United were more than happy to exploit that.

Seedorf: 7 - Gave Milan some faint hope when he halved the deficit late on with a clever goal.

Inzaghi: 5 - Missed a golden chance to level the game late on.

Van der Sar: 7 - He made a superb one-handed save from Pirlo's free kick, and had could do little to prevent either goal.

Rafael: 5.5 - He offered little defensive cover against Ronaldinho in the first half, but improved after the break and nullified the threat from Pato whenever the Milan wingers switched flanks.

Ferdinand: 6 - Unusually uncertain, making several loose headers, but he was given little assistance by the rest of his defence. Generally kept Huntelaar quiet.

Evans: 4 - Clearly nervous as he frequently failed to communicate with his team-mates, standing by while Ferdinand and Evra had to do his share of the defending. Should have been closer to Seedorf for Milan's second goal.

Evra: 6 - Woeful start as he conceded an early free kick before trying an awful overhead clearance that fell straight to Ronaldinho. However he recovered from the setback and remained close on Pato.

Nani: 5 - Showed endeavour on the right hand side but with the exception of one cross at the start of the second half, there was very little end product.

Fletcher: 8 - He got in behind the Milan defence to set up the crucial equaliser, before floating in a perfect ball to set up the third. If he hadn't seized the initiative in the first half, the result could have been very different.

Carrick: 6.5 - Careless on the ball in the first half but improved after the break. Sent off for a second bookable offence in the final seconds of the match that will rule him out of the second leg.

Scholes: 6.5 - He will never score a luckier goal than he did tonight, but he was typically tenacious in the middle of the pitch and knew how to keep Beckham out of the game.

Park: 6 - Played in a more central role than he is used to and didn't have a great influence on the game as Manchester United looked to exploit the flanks.

Rooney: 9 - Frustrated with the lack of service from Nani, but he kept his cool when he outjumped Bonera to put the visitors in front with a perfect header. Extended the lead with another well-taken effort - arguably in the form of his life.

Valencia: 7.5 - Showed Nani how to affect the match when he put a goal on a plate for Rooney with an excellent cross just minutes after coming on.

Brown: N/A - Brought on in the final minutes as the visitors looked to run down the clock.
