Zimbabwe champions FC Platinum undecided on Caf Champions League participation

The ongoing Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League campaign would have yet to be concluded by the 15th of October, the Caf registration deadline

Zimbabwe reigning champions FC Platinum are dithering over accepting an invitation by the Premier Soccer League (PSL) to take part in the readjusted 2018/19 Caf Champions League calendar.

The 2018/19 Caf inter-club season would be a transitional calendar where matches begin in December, ending next May, before permanently switching to the new August to May schedule from next year.

After taking part in the 2018 Champions League edition earlier this year, FC Platinum could once again return to Africa’s elite club competition for the second time inside a year.

The PSL champions from the current campaign would have yet to be decided when the Zimbabwe FA are be required to register Caf inter-club participants by the 15 October registration deadline.

This prompted the PSL to invite 2017 champions FC Platinum and last term’s Chibuku Cup winners Harare City to fill in Zimbabwe’s Champions League and Confederation Cup slots respectively.

“Following a PSL Board of Governors resolution at their meeting on 14 July 2014, the PSL 2017 winners will take part in the 2018/19 CAF inter-club competitions. The PSL season is still underway and will not have completed by 15 October, the deadline for registration,” PSL spokesperson Kudzai Bare told Goal.

FC Platinum are yet to make up their mind in committing to the Caf Champions League. If they accept the invitation, it would be the club’s third time to participate in the Champions League where they debuted in 2011. FC Platinum spokesperson Chido Chizondo said the club is still consulting.

“We are engaging our stakeholders so that we deliberate and come up with a position. Once we make a decision we will make it known to the public but we are not yet giving a timeframe as to when we would arrive at the final decision,” said Chizondo.

Harare City are also yet to determine if they would play in the Confederation Cup.
