Jesse Were steered Zesco United to a derby win against compatriot, John Makwatta’s Buildcon FC in the Zambian Premier League.

Were’s Zesco beat Buildcon by a solitary goal to consolidate their lead at the Zambian Super League summit with 66 points in the Copper belt Derby staged at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Wednesday.

Four Kenyans were involved in the derby with Anthony Akumu lining up alongside Were while Cliffton Miheso came in as a second-half substitute to pair up with Makwatta for Buildcon.

Both Were, Akumu and Makwatta were handed starts with another Kenyan, Miheso being introduced in the second half while defender, David Owino missed the action for Zesco United.

Miheso replaced Chavda Maisha in the 65th minute with Ghanaian Rodger Adongo coming in for Omari Kipuku in the double substitution for Buildcon as the visitors mounted pressure on Zesco.

Zesco had taken the lead through John Ching’andu in the 23rd minute.

Despite a late chance for Buildcon to level things up after Misheck Chaila handled the ball just outside the box, it was Were and Akumu, who disappeared in the dressing room with three points to consolidate their lead at the top.

Buildcon are ninth on the log with 49 points.
