Wright backs Arsenal in refusing to bow to Ramsey contract demands

Arsenal are right to have made a “big statement” in contract talks with Aaron Ramsey, says Ian Wright, with the Gunners making it clear that they will not be held to ransom.

Another senior star has entered the final 12 months of his current deal at Emirates Stadium, with that situation becoming all too frequent for the Gunners’ liking.

There has, however, been a tough stance taken in extension discussions, with an offer reported to have been withdrawn after learning of Ramsey’s demands.

Wright believes Arsenal need to get tough with those looking to line their pockets, despite having already seen the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Jack Wilshere leave the club.

The Gunners legend told BBC Radio 5 Live on Ramsey and his uncertain future in north London: “What I do like about him and what I will always give him credit for, is that he never hides, never ever hides. No matter what stick he gets, he never hides.

“I have to stick with Arsenal, they have to make this kind of stance, the amount of players we've lost in this fashion.

“I believe that Arsenal want him to stay, but they have to make this stance.

“I think Arsenal have to do this, they have to make everybody else in the squad know how it's going to be from this day onwards, and that's why the withdrawal of the contract is a big statement from them.

“And it's a massive one as we're on the verge of losing another player that's a good player for Arsenal.”

Ramsey joined Arsenal from Cardiff in the summer of 2008.

A decade of service in north London has delivered over 330 appearances and 59 goals.

The Wales international has also taken in three FA Cup triumphs, but the 27-year-old is now weighing up his options amid links to the likes of Liverpool and Juventus.
