Why Polo wants Appiah and co. out of the Black Stars

Former Ghana playmaker Mohammed Polo believes the FA did not make the best decision in assigning five top former players to the Black Stars.

James Kwesi Appiah, a member of Ghana's Africa Cup of Nations squad in 1992, was appointed head coach of the side in April.

Stephen Appiah, Richard Kingson, Ibrahim Tanko and Maxwell Konadu - all once players of the team, were added to the 57-year-old's technical staff.

“There are some areas which need to be looked at and that is what is missing - the players in the time of the 70’s, 80’s and even 90’s are not coming into the system," Polo told the media.

“We have Kwesi Appiah, Maxwell Konadu, Ibrahim Tanko and Stephen Appiah at the same place [Black Stars]. This is an area that needs no special training. You just select them [players] and [they] go and play.

"What about those who are coming up? We parade all of them [Appiah and co.] at the [senior] level and leave the U-17 and U-20 for who to do that?

“They [youth teams] need to be trained and we go and gather all these people at the senior level. 

"All these people should be training players in the league because that is where the standard is coming from."

Stephen Appiah and Kingson both played for Ghana at the 2006 and 2010 Fifa World Cup tournaments.

Tanko, once on the books of German side Borussia Dortmund, was also helpful as the Black Stars qualified for Germany 2006 but fell short of making the squad for the final tournament.

Konadu also played for the four-time African champions in the 90s.
