Why Juventus are confident of signing Liverpool's Emre Can on a free

Comments
The German has received football guarantees as well as a top financial package to select Turin as his next destination in the summer

From vice-chairman Pavel Nedved labelling him “amazing and technically gifted” to general manager Beppe Moratta referring to Emre Can as “great” on more than one occasion, Juventus have not exactly been taciturn in their pursuit of Liverpool’s midfielder.

And as the January window approaches, with the German - out of contract this summer - able to then agree a pre-deal with an overseas club, the noises out of Italy have only amplified.

Despite reports suggesting the 23-year-old’s transfer to the Serie A champions at the end of the season has already been signed off, both clubs and the player insist otherwise.

Juve, however, are hugely confident of recruiting Can as a free agent for two overarching reasons: they have guaranteed him a starting role as their midfield controller and are understood to have offered him a yearly package in excess of £4.5 million, placing him amongst their highest earners, with only Miralem Pjanic, Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain banking more. This is excluding what would be a significant signing-on fee given there is no transfer cost involved.

It is the first element that is most appealing to the Bayern Munich academy graduate, who is not assured of a spot in Jurgen Klopp’s XI - let alone in his preferred holding role.

Juve are desperate to inject physicality, a ball carrier and more directness into the centre of the pitch to complement Pjanic’s playmaking abilities.

They are also intent on building a core for the long term, with Can focal to this strategy.

He would cement a place in Massimiliano Allegri’s midfield three and offer more continuity, given Sami Khedira’s injury issues.

The 30-year-old, whose terms run out in June 2019, could potentially exit the Bianconeri this summer as he considers whether to remain for another annum, or embark on a fresh challenge in Major League Soccer.

Juve’s midfield situation and what they require to push on marries well with Can’s ambitions for his advancement. That it presents an opportunity to test himself in a different country, league and playing style cannot be ignored.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have not put forward an updated proposal to the Germany international and no fresh talks have materialised.

The club have resisted inserting a release clause into an offer that does not align with market value, and with RB Leipzig dynamo Naby Keita to arrive ahead of 2018-19, the Merseysiders have additional designs on fortifying their midfield.

“It’s pretty rare that I speak to him about the contract situation because we gave already all the information that we can give - that’s it,” was Klopp’s last word on Can's situation, which will give Juve greater reason for optimism.

“For us, there is no difference as long as we don’t get the information that he has signed for another club.” the Liverpool manager added.

“It’s exactly as it was.”

Juventus will continue their offensive to ensure that won’t be the case for long once the winter window opens.
