Leeuwenburgh, Onyango and Williams have all been nominated for the Goalkeeper of the Season award, but who deserves to win the award?

The 2018/19 Premier Soccer League (PSL) season which was a thrilling one reached its business end last weekend.

There was no shortage of standout performers when it comes to the goalkeeping department in the South African top-flight.

Denis Onyango, Ronwen Williams and Peter Leeuwenburgh are the three shot-stoppers who have been nominated for the PSL Goalkeeper of the Season award.

But of the three goalkeepers, who deserves the award?

Peter Leeuwenburgh

The towering shot-stopper enjoyed a decent debut season in the PSL after joining Cape Town City from Dutch Eredivisie football heavyweights, Ajax Amsterdam in July 2018.

Leeuwenburgh made headlines when he played an important role in helping the Citizens win their maiden MTN8 Cup as he saved two spot-kicks during a penalty shootout against SuperSport United.

The 25-year-old Dutch player also helped City secure a top-four finish in the league while recording eight clean sheets in 28 matches.

Denis Onyango

The Uganda captain enjoyed another superb season with Mamelodi Sundowns as he was one of their key players as the team clinched a record-extending ninth PSL title which was also the Tshwane giants' second successive trophy.

Onyango, who won the PSL Goalkeeper of the Season in 2016, boasts a clean sheet percentage of 47.1% having recorded eight clean sheets in 17 league appearances making him one of the best shot-stoppers in the competition.

The 33-year-old's form and consistency also helped the Brazilians reach the Caf Champions League semi-finals where they narrowly lost to Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca.

Ronwen Williams

The experienced keeper was ever-present for SuperSport United and he also served as the club's captain in Dean Furman's absence.

Williams impressively recorded 12 clean sheets in 30 league matches and his outstanding performances ensured that Matsatsantsa secured a top-eight finish in the PSL.

The SuperSport academy product was also a regular member of the South African national team and he featured during Bafana Bafana's friendly game against Paraguay in November 2018.

VERDICT: Onyango deserves PSL Goalkeeper of the Season award

There is no doubt that Onyango deserves the Goalkeeper of the Season award after narrowly missing out on last season's accolade which was scooped by Kaizer Chiefs captain Itumeleng Khune despite lesser games compared to both Williams and Leeuwenburgh.

The former SuperSport United player was often the difference for Sundowns which propelled the Tshwane giants to yet another league title.

His ability to deliver when it mattered the most gives him the edge over his rivals, who are also nominated for the award.
