‘We can keep the spirit going’ – Ojo upbeat about Akwa United’s Confederation Cup chances

Olorunleke Ojo feels Akwa United can surpass fans expectation as they continue their quest to win the 2018 Caf Confederation Cup trophy.

The reigning Nigerian Federation Cup champions were paired with Sudanese giants Al-Hilal in the competition’s play-off round on Wednesday evening.

And the former Flying Eagles goalkeeper whose penalty heroics powered his team past  Al-Ittihad Tripoli believes that focus and discipline are key ingredients that will carry Akwa United on.

“Our target is to go as far as we can, and I can assure you that if God can help us scale through [Al-Ittihad] hurdle, we can keep the spirit going,” Ojo told Goal.

“We just hope that God will keep giving us the strength because all we need to do is to remain focus outside and inside the field.

“It is through that we can achieve what we want, and I am very sure that Akwa United are going to go beyond what people think.”

In other pairings, Plateau United face USM Alger while Bidvest Wits battle Enyimba, with MFM FC trying Djoliba for size.

Even at this, Ojo thinks having four Nigerian teams in the championship is a blessing in disguise as a Nigerian team might end up as eventual winners.

“It is unfortunate that they [MFM and Plateau United] dropped from the Caf Champions League, but I think it’s a blessing in disguise,” he continued.

“This is a very great and good opportunity for us to do something good out of this tournament and I can assure you if we keep on doing our best with hard work and discipline.

“I can assure you that the Confederation Cup is going to come back to this country.”
