Vihiga United 2-2 Mathare United: ‘Slum Boys’ recover to salvage a draw away

Mathare United came from a goal down to secure a 2-2 draw with Vihiga United in a Kenyan Premier League (KPL) match played on Sunday.

It took the hosts just eight minutes to find the back of the net through a set piece. The 2008 league champions gave away an easy free-kick just outside the 18-yard area, Lawrence Luganda rose for the occasion to give his side a lead.

The goal was a wake-up call for the Francis Kimanzi led side but Vihiga United looked solid at the back ensuring the ball is not played in their third.

The 'Slum Boys' created a chance of their own in the 35th minute; Vihiga conceded a foul in a promising position. Cliff Nyakeya took it but Johnstone Omurwa headed it a few inches over the bar.

After the break, the former champions came stronger hoping to get an equalizer and most probably the winner. But it was the hosts who doubled the advantage in the 68th minute through Wafula who managed to get Amos Kigadi's precise pass before slotting the ball past keeper Allan Owiny.

In the 81st minute, Nyakeya finished off a ball from Chrispin Oduor to give his team a lifeline. The defenders were caught sleeping on the job and the latter found the former Gor Mahia Youth player to make it 2-1.

Johnstone Omurwa made up for his mistake in the stoppages when he scored the equalizer to spoil the party for the Sammy Okoth led side.
