Ander Herrera has emerged as Manchester United’s midfield enforcer, but he also has some goalkeeping skills in his locker.
The Spain international starred for the Red Devils in 2016-17, with his energy and bite in Jose Mourinho’s engine room earning him the club’s Player of the Year award.
Countryman De Gea had enjoyed a period of dominance at that ceremony in recent years, but his crown has been passed on.
He would also appear to have competition in the shot-stopping stakes, with Herrera showing during his summer break that he is a versatile and multi-talented performer.
This is not the first time that Herrara has showcased his impressive reflexes either, as United have been quick to point out.
De Gea, though, was quick to offer a response, reminding Herrera that he is also as good with his feet as he is with his hands.
The Red Devils could find themselves short on keeping options this summer, as De Gea continues to be linked with a return to his homeland at Real Madrid.
Transfer talk has eased of late, but the issue is never far from bubbling to the surface during each passing window.
United are understandably reluctant to part with a key figure, but they do already have Argentina international Sergio Romero on their books and could use Herrera as back-up by the look of things!
