The former government official says that he didn't play any role in the Black Stars' failure to make it to the 2018 World Cup

Former Ghana youth and sports minister Nii Lanteh Vanderpuye has rejected suggestions that his decisions and managerial style led to Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2018 Fifa World Cup.

The Odododiodio Member of Parliament was in charge when Ghana shared a goalless with Uganda in the opening game and lost 2-0 to Egypt in Alexandria.

However the Black Stars picked three draws and a win in his absence and finished third in Group E with only seven points, six behind Egypt who eventually won the sole ticket.

“People who say those things have little minds because I believe in such situations, you sit down and critically do analysis of the failure instead of making it personal,” Vanderpuye told Class FM.

“And I’ve heard so many things but I refrained from commenting on it. I will only say that they are not thinking well, those who are saying those things are not thinking well. If they are thinking well, they’ll be able to do critical analysis.

He added: “Under my administration, how many matches were played by the Black Stars? What were the results? One point home, one loss. After I left, how many matches have been played? What were the results? So why do you blame, why won’t you blame the current ministry or the current government or the minister?

"Have the Ghana FA looked at themselves to see whether they were also a contributing factor to our failure to qualify or not? I didn't jeopardize the team's chances and will never do that.”

Ghana were present at the tournament in 2006, 2010 and 2014 editions and reached the quarterfinals in the 2010.
