Surprise! Turkish fans stage stadium fight to deliver birthday cake to unsuspecting policeman

A policeman on duty in a Turkish football game feared the worst when he prepared to intervene in a scuffle between fans - but he went on to receive a pleasant, not to mention delicious, surprise.

AFYOK, an organised fan group in TFF Second League club Afyonspor, found out that officer Engin Cakin was celebrating his birthday on February 15.

The date coincided with Afyonspor's clash against 1922 Konyaspor, and AFYOK decided to mark the occasion in a rather unusual manner.

At half time and with the hosts leading 1-0, attentions were diverted to an apparent fight that broke out among members of the home crowd.

A detachment of police officers was sent to intervene in the fracas, with Cakin one of the first to reach the stands.

But to his surprise, once he approached the Afyonspor faithful the fighting suddenly came to a halt, with fans instead circling around the doubtlessly puzzled policeman.

Cakin was then treated to a raucous chorus of 'Happy Birthday', and even received a cake - receiving another round of applause when he blew out the candles and thanked supporters.

"As part of our duty we are always on our toes for any kind of unrest that might happen in the stands. This sometimes means we have to get face to face with fans," the beaming officer told reporters.

"That’s why I’m really surprised and happy with this. This shows, whatever happens their love and support for us.

"I’m glad and proud to have received this kind of love and support."

Perhaps inspired by the half-time festivities, Afyonspor went on to ensure that their fans would have plenty more to celebrate.

Three further goals after the break sealed a convincing 4-0 win for the hosts, a result that leaves them in eighth place in the third tier of Turkish football.
