Thika United handed Gor Mahia their second defeat in the 2018 Kenyan Premier League following a 1-0 win at the Thika Sub County Stadium.

The only team that had managed that feat before Sunday’s game is Bandari, who beat K’Ogalo 2-1 at the Mbaraki Sports Club.

Though Gor Mahia have already secured the league title with five games to spare, a beating by a side still struggling to fight for their place in the league next season was unforeseeable.

Gor Mahia players didn’t train ahead of the match as they continued with the ongoing strike over unpaid allowances. Coach Dylan Kerr had expressed concerns on the fitness of K'Ogalo players ahead of the game.

“I am not sure whether we will be able to have a full squad to face Thika United. I have been told that all the players in my starting eleven will be available. I have not seen them myself but am hoping they have been doing some training.

“It is unfortunate that such things are happening and I pray that all the players selected will be there if not then all our hard work will go to waste.”

Michael Odongo gave Thika United the lead in the 62nd minute. Thika United, who will next take on Tusker, had not won a match since May 13. The milk vendors had gone 13 matches without a single victory, their best performance being a 1-1 draw with Kakamega Homeboyz on July 14 in Bukhungu Stadium.

Sunday’s home victory saw Thika United take their tally of points to 23, five adrift of Wazito, who lost 1-0 to Ulinzi Stars away in Kericho. Gor Mahia kept top spot with 71 points and will be resting easy at the summit as they wait for September 29 to be crowned the champions.

Elsewhere, Sony Sugar picked a point on the road after settling for a 1-1 draw with Vihiga United away in Mumias. Fredrick Onyango gave Sony Sugar the lead in the 58th minute but it was short lived after Vihiga restored parity three minutes later through Dennis Wafula.

Kakamega Homeboyz beat rivals Nzoia Sugar 3-2 in a hard fought battle at the Bukhungu Stadium. Moses Mudavadi brace and Collins Wakhungu effort handed Homeboyz a slim win at home.
