The Owena Whales striker has expressed his delight at the way they battled hard to secure a point against the Pride of Rivers

Sunshine Stars’ Ajibola Otegbeye is thrilled with Owena Whales’ hard-earned point against Rivers United as well as scoring his first goal of the season in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL)  fixture played last weekend.

The Owena Whales were on the verge of another loss after Ossy Martins put the Pride of Rivers ahead from the penalty spot in the 69th minute, but Otegbeye’s penalty five minutes from full-time restored parity.

Otegbeye confirmed that they had left for Port Harcourt with the mindset of picking up the three points, but that they are content with a share of the spoils.

“I feel so grateful and happy to be back to what I know how to do best which is the act of goal scoring,” Otegbeye told Goal.

“It was a tough game for us but we were determined that we would take the three points from the encounter. We are happy to return back to Akure with one point. After we lost to Enugu Rangers at home nobody was happy with our performance in that game.

“it was the reason why we approached the game with Rivers United with the mindset that if Rangers could come to Akure to beat us, nothing stops us from going to Port Harcourt to surprise them again like it was last season. We give thanks to God that we didn’t return back to Akure empty-handed.”

The 20-year-old rued the inability of Sunshine Stars to stay within touch of the top three on the NPFL Group A table, but he affirmed that they are doing their best to ensure that they close the gap to the playoff spots.

“Sunshine Stars do not deserve the position they are on the league table,” he continued.

“We should be in the top three but due to the politics of the game, we have to be content with the place we are at present. But we are working hard to ensure that Sunshine Stars finish the season within the top three and thus qualify for the playoff.”

Sunshine Stars are presently seventh on the table in the top with 20 points from 16 games and they will have their hands full when they host Wikki Tourists in Akure next week.
