Stephen Odey fires blank as FC Zurich fall to Bayer Leverkusen

The 20-year-old could not follow up with his first-leg heroics as the Swiss outfit lost out by the odd goal in Germany

Bayer Leverkusen defeated Stephen Odey's FC Zurich 1-0 in Thursday's Europa League encounter to move to the top of Group A.

The Nigeria striker had helped his side secure a victory in the reverse fixture last month, scoring the winner in an enthralling 3-2 win. And he had his eyes set on continuing in Germany.

Tin Jedvaj, however, settled the scores on the hour mark, benefitting from a Julian Brandt assist as Odey, on for the entire duration, was unable to influence the tie for his side.

With the win, Leverkusen swapped positions with their Swiss visitors to top the group on goal difference. Both sides are tied on nine points and have qualified for the next round of Europa League.

The former MFM striker will have to wait till Sunday when Zürich square up against Sion in a Swiss Super League encounter to add to his 2018-19 tally of seven goals.
