Socceroos Watch: Mooy and Ryan fall in Premier League openers, Rogic's Celtic stunned

Comments
It was a tough night for Socceroos in action

It wasn't the start to the Premier League season either Aaron Mooy or Mat Ryan were hoping for after both their sides fell to convincing defeats in the opening round.

Mooy played a full 90 minutes for Huddersfield in a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea, while Ryan was helpless for both of Watford's goals as Brighton lost 2-0.

After avoiding relegation last season, both clubs face a real battle to do so again with these opening results not what they were after.

There was a shock defeat for Socceroos midfielder Tom Rogic also as Celtic were handed a surprise 1-0 loss by Hearts.

The reigning Scottish champions were undone by a 56th-minute goal from Kyle Lafferty with Rogic introduced in the 70th minute and unable to conjure up an equaliser.

Two Aussies did feature for Hearts, who now sit top of the Scottish Premiership, with Ben Garuccio playing the full game at left-back and Oliver Bozanic coming on as a substitute.

Socceroos skipper Mile Jedinak tasted victory on his return to action for Aston Villa in a 3-2 win over Wigan, but it wasn't all smooth sailing for the Aussie.

Jedinak handing Wigan an equaliser early in the second half after a misplaced back pass left his keeper short, who could only blast the ball into an oncoming Nick Powell with the deflection finding the back of the net.
